Let’s assume that Jim has x apples and Wanda has y apples.
According to the first statement, if Jim gives Wanda an apple, they will have the same number of apples. This means that:
x – 1 = y + 1
x = y + 2
According to the second statement, if Wanda gives Jim an apple, Jim will have twice as many apples as Wanda. This means that:
x + 1 = 2(y – 1)
x = 2y – 3
We can now combine these two equations by substituting the first equation into the second equation:
y + 2 = 2y – 3
y = 5
Substituting this value of y into the first equation gives us:
x = y + 2 = 7
Therefore, Jim has 7 apples and Wanda has 5 apples.
