Playing for Cash
Four jolly men sat down to play,
They played all night until the break of day.
They played for cash and not for fun,
with a separate score for every one.
When it came time to square accounts,
they all made quite fair amounts.
Not one lost and all gained.
Can you Explain this?
The key to understanding this riddle is to notice that the last line says “Not one lost and all gained.” This means that the total amount of money they won was the same as the total amount they played for, so the game did not result in any net loss or gain of money.
Since there were four players and all of them won the same amount of money, we can assume that they each won one-fourth of the total amount played for. This way, when they squared accounts, each player had received the same amount of money and nobody had lost any money.
For example, if they played for $400 in total, each player would have won $100. When they squared accounts, each player would have received $100, which adds up to the total of $400 they played for. Therefore, not one lost and all gained, as the riddle states.
